How much does it cost to wire a basement?

Can you move a light switch or outlet?
Yes. Moving a device a few feet is usually simple. Moving it to a completely different wall requires fishing new wire, which may require small drywall cuts. We always discuss the “path of least damage” with you before we start.
Do I need a permit for a small renovation?
In Ontario, almost all electrical work—even adding a few potlights or outlets—requires an ESA notification. Wire and Power handles this for you. It is the only way to ensure your home insurance honors a claim if something ever happens.
Do you install customer-supplied light fixtures?
Yes! You buy the style you love (from Wayfair, Home Depot, or a boutique), and we provide the safe, professional installation. We just ask that you ensure the fixtures are CSA or cUL approved for use in Canada.
My home has aluminum wiring. Do I have to rewire the entire house?
Not usually. While aluminum wiring (common in homes built between 1960-1970s) can be a fire risk if connections loosen, ripping it all out is expensive. In most cases, we perform an ESA-approved “Pig-tailing” procedure. We attach a piece of copper wire to the end of the aluminum wire using specialized connectors and anti-oxidant paste. This makes the outlets safe and satisfies insurance companies for a fraction of the cost of rewiring.
Do I need hardwired smoke detectors?
If you are doing a substantial renovation (like a basement finish or an addition), the Electrical Code usually requires you to upgrade your smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms.
